The 'why' is because there are, let me count them -- Eowyn, Arwen, Rosie, Lady Artanis -- /four/ females with speaking parts in the Lord of the Rings. That leaves femmeslashers with very little to work from. (I may be forgetting some minor parts... oh, and of course Shelob. Any of that around?)
